Biofeedback & Neurofeedback Therapy for Addiction and Mental Health Recovery
At Desert Recovery Centers in Arizona, we integrate cutting-edge biofeedback and neurofeedback therapy into our dual-diagnosis treatment programs. These non-invasive, drug-free technologies help clients regain control over stress, cravings, anxiety, depression, PTSD, and addiction by training the brain and body to self-regulate in real time. Combined with evidence-based therapy and luxury amenities, biofeedback and neurofeedback dramatically improve outcomes for stimulant addiction, alcohol use disorder, trauma, and co-occurring mental health conditions.
What Is Biofeedback Therapy and How Does It Help Addiction Recovery?
Biofeedback therapy uses sensors to monitor physiological processes (heart rate, muscle tension, skin temperature, breathing) and displays them on a screen in real time. Clients learn to control these functions consciously, reducing anxiety, improving sleep, and lowering cravings – key triggers for relapse.
What Is Neurofeedback Therapy and How Does It Work for Addiction?
Neurofeedback (also called EEG biofeedback) is an advanced form of biofeedback that trains brainwave patterns directly. Using sensors on the scalp, clients watch their real-time brain activity and “play” simple games or videos using only their mind. Over sessions, the brain learns to shift from dysregulated patterns (common in addiction, ADHD, anxiety, and trauma) to calmer, more focused states.

Can Neurofeedback Help with Drug and Alcohol Cravings?
Yes – powerfully. Addiction hijacks the brain’s reward system and creates hyper-aroused or depressed brainwave states. Neurofeedback normalizes these patterns, reducing the intensity of cravings for methamphetamine, cocaine, opioids, and alcohol.
Is Neurofeedback Effective for Anxiety and Depression in Recovery?
Neurofeedback directly targets the brainwave imbalances that drive these conditions, often producing results faster than medication alone and with no side effects. Many clients reduce or eliminate psychiatric medicines under medical supervision after completing a neurofeedback protocol.
How Does Biofeedback Help with PTSD and Trauma Recovery?
Trauma survivors often live in chronic “fight-or-flight.” Heart-rate variability (HRV) biofeedback helps the nervous system return to its “rest-and-digest” mode. When combined with neurofeedback and trauma-focused therapy (EMDR, CBT), clients experience fewer flashbacks, nightmares, and hypervigilance. The VA and Department of Defense now recognize neurofeedback as an evidence-based PTSD treatment.
Is Neurofeedback FDA-Approved or Evidence-Based?
Neurofeedback devices are FDA-registered (not “approved” because they are non-invasive training tools, not drugs). The American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry and the International Society for Neurofeedback and Research classify it as “Level 1: Efficacious” for ADHD and “Level 2: Probably Efficacious” for addiction, anxiety, depression, and PTSD.
What Does a Biofeedback/Neurofeedback Session Feel Like?
Completely comfortable and relaxing. You sit in a recliner while small sensors are placed on your scalp, ears, or body. You watch a movie, listen to music, or play a simple game that responds to your brainwaves or physiology. When your brain produces the desired patterns, you receive positive feedback (the movie becomes brighter, and the music plays smoothly). There is no electricity delivered to the brain – it’s purely training through feedback.
