Most Anxious States

An analysis of 2023 U.S. Census Bureau data looked into reported symptoms of anxiety across the U.S., asking how often respondents felt anxious, nervous, or on edge. The average percentages of respondents who felt this way in each state were collected to compile the top 10 states with the highest reported instances of anxiety. Each of the top 10 states included more than 51% of respondents claiming to have experienced anxiety, with the top three highest being Utah at nearly 56%, followed by Oregon (roughly 54%) and Colorado (more than 53%).

What is Anxiety?

Anxiety is a feeling of fear, dread, and uneasiness. It may cause you to sweat, feel restless and tense, and have a rapid heartbeat. It’s important to remember that symptoms vary from person to person.

Understanding anxiety and its role in addiction involves recognizing the relationship between the two conditions. Anxiety disorders, such as generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), social anxiety disorder, and panic disorder, often co-occur with substance use disorders.

Many people with anxiety disorders turn to alcohol or drugs as a way to self-medicate and alleviate their symptoms temporarily. However, this coping method can quickly spiral into addiction as individuals become reliant on substances to manage their anxiety. Conversely, substance abuse can increase feelings of anxiety and contribute to the development of anxiety disorders. Therefore, addressing both anxiety and addiction together is essential for successful recovery.

Comprehensive treatment approaches that use therapy, medication, stress management techniques, and support networks can help individuals break the cycle of anxiety and addiction and achieve lasting sobriety and happiness.

You are not alone, and many have the same questions you do as they are understanding anxiety.

How can I reduce my anxiety?

There are many ways to reduce anxiety, and each person’s approach will be different, but some helpful things are to ask yourself grounding questions, remind yourself you are safe, redirect your nervous energy, or take mental breaks.

It’s important to remember that anxiety is a natural experience, but in cases of ongoing anxiety issues and signs of a potential anxiety disorder, professional treatment is recommended for effective, safe, and lasting treatment.

What causes anxiety?

There are many causes for anxiety; the most common causes include:

  • Genetics
  • Imbalances in the brain
  • Physical health (thyroid disorders, chronic pain, or heart issues)
  • Stress
  • Trauma
  • Personality traits (perfectionism, overthinking, low self-esteem)
  • Major life events (moving, divorce, job loss, etc.)
  • Childhood upbringing
  • Social pressures
