A lot of mindfulness, guided mindfulness walking around, as well, because

Mandy's Story: Hope After Bipolar and Alcohol Addiction

Shared voluntarily and with consent. Individual experiences vary and are not a guarantee of any outcome.

Twelve-step recovery never reached the root for Mandy. Here is how mental-health-based care changed that.

You're not alone. I have been there. There are so many people that have been there, and, you know, this disease, whether it be mental illness or substance abuse. It does make you feel alone and singled out, but, you know, there is a lot of hope. And, you know, you just kind of have to take that first step. in asking for help. This is Mandy here, and recently, I've been struggling with alcoholism, drug addiction, and bipolar disorder, which is why I came to desert recovery. DRC, like I said, you know, it's very mental health based, and that's exactly what I needed because I have a lot of experience with sobriety and 12 step recovery, but, you know, didn't really get to the root cause of what I was needing. I was pretty lost and hopeless. I came to a place that, you know, gave me the tools and the care that I needed so that I can be successful. And it made me remember that, you know, I'm not alone, and that there is help, and, you know, there's always somebody on the other end of the phone.

Daleny's Story: From Hopeless to a Future

Shared voluntarily and with consent. Individual experiences vary and are not a guarantee of any outcome.

She could not picture a month ahead. This is Daleny's story, from hopeless to a future.

It was very scary. I felt extremely lost in the world, wasn't sure what the next step would be, or how to get out of the dark cold that I had been in for many years. Before treatment I felt extremely hopeless. I did not think there was a future for me, I could not see, you know, a month ahead, a year ahead, and anything. I was just kind of giving up at that point. I realized it was time for change kind of within, like, a millisecond. I was with my best friend. We've known each other since five years old, and I just looked at her. She was, like, just looked so happy, and I realized that I was so far away from what she was feeling, and in that moment, I just told her, I don't know what to do. I need help. I had struggled with addiction for about 10 years, but always knew that my addiction stemmed from untreated mental illness. With the experiences I've had in my life, it only drove me further into substances because I just didn't know how to cope or move forward without them. I preferred coming to desert recovery centers because their approach is mental health first, along with that addiction and substance abuse. And when I saw that, I was, like, 100% this was for me. Now, 29 days sober, got through all of my lows while being here, completely sober. And I haven't done that since I was about 15. First, I would say, don't wait, get the help now. I wish I did this. I'm young, but I still wish I did this like five years ago. You can get help, regardless of the pain that you feel. There's no one big traumatic event that needs to happen in order for you to say, I need help.

Why is our Church location women-only? Gender-specific care removes barriers so women can open up and heal.

Here at our church location, it differs from our men's location in the fact that we are mental health primary, substance abuse secondary. Gender specific care is important to minimize distraction, distraction of someone of the other sex, of reluctance to become open and vulnerable because of another sex. It's people that have trauma related to the other sex. These things all create serious barriers to treatment progress.
